Duplin County Schools to participate in National Education Equity Lab Program

KENANSVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA- July 13, 2022 - The National Education Equity Lab is a nonprofit organization that provides college courses taught by faculty from some of the nation’s leading colleges and universities to Title-1 eligible high schools through their College-in-High School program. Partner universities include Stanford, Brown, Howard, Georgetown, Princeton, Harvard, and Yale to name a few and course offerings range from the Humanities and Social Sciences to STEM and Business. Founded in 2019, the program is currently in 180 high schools across 32 states. Duplin County Schools will be among the first districts to participate in North Carolina.

Duplin County Schools received information about the program less than a month ago through our North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Southeast Regional Director, Dr. Beth Metcalf. Recognizing the magnitude of this opportunity for our students, the alignment with our mission to prepare all students for career, college, and life success, and our desire to give our students a world-class education, district leaders immediately reached out to the National Education Equity Lab. Arrangements quickly came together to offer Brown University’s Law and Literature course at Duplin Early College High School in the fall semester of 2022 with plans to expand to our traditional high schools in the spring.

College-in-High School courses are designated as dual enrollment meaning students will receive both high school and college credit. Instruction is conducted by a university professor via video lessons, followed by live virtual support sessions once per week by a university teaching fellow. A high school teacher will be assigned as the co-teacher, ensuring the university instruction is delivered and students are provided academic support throughout the week. The National Education Equity Lab will also provide a course manager to serve as a support liaison between the high school and the college or university to maximize the success of our students. The all-inclusive cost for each course of $250 will be paid by the school or the district so that students and families bear no expense for participation.

Superintendent Dr. Austin Obasohan states, “On behalf of the Board of Education, we are so grateful that Dr. Belf Metcalf shared this awesome opportunity. This program is a natural extension of the powerful teaching and learning and college-going culture we have worked so hard to instill in our schools and in our students. We strongly believe that our students can go anywhere, do anything, and excel in a globally competitive society!”
