Local middle schools compete in Battle of the Books

Duplin County Schools Middle School Battle of the Books competition was held February 24th at Ed Emory Auditorium. Seven schools battled each other two at a time for 21 rounds of quiz bowl style action. The team with the highest cumulative points was named the winner.

This year that team was Chinquapin Elementary School. Coached by Nina Gail Lanier and Karen Kennedy, team members are:

            Zoe Bellomy

            Christopher Byron

            Yara Cruz-Morales

            Rosa Duarte Sanchez

            Aubrey Hall

            Lily Herrera Venegas

            Emmaleigh Imel

            Elizabeth King

            Dakota Mitchell

            Emma Outlaw

            Madison Smith

            Alessa Spell

Chinquapin will represent Duplin County in the regional competition on March 22nd.

Wallace Elementary School finished in 2nd place and North Duplin Jr/Sr finished in 3rd.

The purpose of Battle of the Books is simple – to create interest and excitement around reading. Team members from all seven schools have been reading a selection of 23 titles for months to prepare for the event. Although the competition is thrilling, the goal is not necessarily to win but to READ! So, in that regard they are all winners!
