Students from Duplin County Schools attend Future Teacher Conference

On April 6th, 18 students from Duplin County Schools participated in the Future Teacher Conference hosted by the Watson College of Education at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington.

The full-day conference explored education as a profession and the various degree options available at UNCW. After a brief welcome from the Dean and Associate Dean of Watson College and a fun ice-breaker activity, students selected three breakout sessions to attend. Topics for the sessions included exploring ways to make instruction engaging and fun, using music from around the world to promote social justice and emotional well-being, increasing diversity in the teaching profession, addressing the learning needs of students with disabilities, and teaching beyond the worksheet.

Students were also treated to a panel discussion with current Watson College students and lunch in the Wagoner Dining Hall.

Mrs. Sylvia Draughn, Human Resources Support, accompanied the students and saw mutually beneficial outcomes of the conference. “Not only was this a great opportunity for our students to learn more about a potential career pathway, it was also a long-range recruitment opportunity for Duplin County Schools. Keeping our own is a powerful recruitment strategy for us and we would love to hire these students in a few years.”

Special thanks to our College Liaisons for getting this information out to interested students at their respective schools and for serving as chaperones.
